A high VLDL value should not be read in isolation. A person with VLDL of 34 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol of 80 mg/dL, normal blood pressure, no diabetes, and no smoking history has a different risk picture from someone with the same VLDL but diabetes, high blood pressure, low HDL, high apoB, and a family history of early heart disease.
